"Poetry is the universal language which the heart holds with nature and itself..." Hazlitt
But no... This project is not just poetry readings, not just live music, not just alcohol, not just costumes and make up... This is not a "first time ever... not a "one time only..."
One of the most important literary genres in Turkish Literature History was and still is poetry... But what can be a good way to physically translate and appreciate it? What abut experiencing a poetry recitation with live music and theatrical elements, in an elegant but intimate atmosphere, accompanied by a style-specific alcoholic beverage…
Simply called ŞİİR (poetry), this project was conceived by
Fulya Peker, soon after visiting a legendary chanson bar in Paris. In tasting
music, wine, and poetry simultaneously, she recognized how these elements can create a similar ecstatic effect if presented in the right ambiance. As someone who lived with poetry for many years, she wanted to convey
the importance of the heritage left behind by the poets of her native
language through ongoing events in NYC… Since Parisian, Persian and Anatolian fusion is evident in the
Turkish poetry tradition and since there is a large library extending from the
past to our day, it is possible to carry ŞİİR to different ambiances on a
regular basis, to reveal
the various intercultural sounds and images Turkish poetry may evoke. With poet-specific or concept-specific nights, guest actors-musicians-dancers, invited poets, English translations of Turkish poetry, improvisations of rewuested poems and potluck-poetry sessions, this project leads us to one word: Ecstasy...
You know Turkish…? It is time to experience and appreciate
its beauty! You don’t know Turkish…? It is still a pleasure to hear the
music of this multi-layered language stripped from meaning…
