MODERN MYTHOLOGIES PROJECT

MISSION STATEMENT:

The similarity between the act of mimesis and the creation of mythology is worthy of closer exploration. In both processes, one strives to affirm one’s will to create in order to fortify one’s continuation as a human being. In both modes there is a desire to recognize the crises of existence. The confrontation with such crises stimulates the eternal struggle of the clash between being a creation and being a creator. Only through remembering the instinct of creating anew may one endure the ever-changing momentum of creation itself.

Modern Mythologies Project (MMP) intends to unite fine arts, performing arts, and literature to reveal the connection between myth-making and artistic creativity; to confront the creator as creation, observer as observed, artist as artwork; to reactivate the inert knowledge and experience of art.

There are three steps to create a MMP piece. The first step is to form a monologue through extensive research on an artist’s personal writings, such as journals, memoirs, letters, poems, notes, etc. and to identify the objects representing the artist’s aesthetic approach. The second step is to articulate the monologue through special intonation methods inspired by the sounds of the artist’s inner life and environment, which are then presented as live recitation or arranged as an audio recording to be used during the performance. The third step is to create a movement notation through the embodiment of the images the spoken words and found objects generate, inspired by the artwork created by the artist. With the help of this three step process, artist’s words become the music for their artwork in motion.

During the physical research process of MMP Fulya Peker's SPLIT AND UNITE exercise is used, which is inspired by both the physical expressions of words, and the verbal expressions of the body; and created to trigger the sensory connotations of words and stimulate the bodies to respond to them freely; to create awareness about the interaction, integration, interjection, intersection, introspection and interruption between the physical and the verbal, while they separately but simultaneously express similar or different responses to sensory stimulants. Through this practice, the performer split and unite the physical and the verbal, create the needed sensory language, and re-form words through gesticulations in response to a new found rhythm, pitch or various phonetic possibilities.

MMP is not only an artistic but also an educational project.  The aim is to introduce fine artists and their works to art students or art enthusiasts through performance/lecture series. Ideally every month, a slide talk by a specialist about the artist of the month will be followed by a 20 minute performance piece. Annually there will be Pithoigia Performance which will be a collage of performances on different artists presented throughout that year, i.e. the jars of wine (Pathoi) from the previous year's harvest will be opened.

MMP is in search of small performance space residencies at art schools, museums, studios or galleries; also seeking collaboration with art curators, art historians and specialists. To learn and to experience arts as mythologies can be a powerful and enriching experience. Through its low budget and strong content this project is an experience that can enhance the art of receiving an art work.
